Cookie Policy

What this site stores in your browser, why, for how long, and how to change your choice.

How consent works here

The first time you visit, a banner asks you to Accept or Decline. Your choice is saved in a browser-storage item called hto_consent so we don't ask again on this device. If you have not chosen yet, or you choose Decline, our advertising consent signal defaults to denied. We also honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal sent by a supporting browser or extension, and treat it the same as clicking Decline.

You can change your mind at any time:

Be accurate about what "Decline" changes

What actually happens

A script from Microsoft Advertising loads on every page of this site, whatever you choose, so that a consent signal can be sent to Microsoft. That means a network request to Microsoft's measurement service happens on every page load regardless of consent. What your choice changes is not whether that request happens, but what it's allowed to do with cookies: when consent is denied, Microsoft's own documentation states that first-party advertising cookies are not read or written, third-party advertising cookies are not written, and any third-party cookie that is read is used only for fraud and spam detection — never for advertising. We are not going to describe the tag as "off until you click Accept," because the tag itself still runs; only the cookie behavior differs.

_uetsid_exp / _uetvid_explocalStorage (not cookies)Microsoft Advertising UET tag (only after Accept)Store the expiration time for the matching _uetsid/_uetvid cookie, as a backup in browsers that limit cookie lifetimeMirrors the matching cookie
__cf_bmCookieCloudflare (technical/security — not consent-gated)Bot-management: helps distinguish automated traffic from real visitors so the site stays available30 minutes

Durations for the Microsoft Advertising items are Microsoft's own typical figures as published in their help documentation at the time we last checked; Microsoft can change how these work without notifying us, so treat these as reported rather than fixed. We do not control the exact lifetime of the CDN's technical cookie beyond what Cloudflare publishes.

Cookie categories

  • Strictly necessary / technical — __cf_bm. Used to keep the site secure and available. These are not gated by the cookie banner because they don't involve advertising or tracking your activity across sites.
  • Preference — hto_consent. Stores your own choice; without it, we'd have to ask you every visit.
  • Advertising / measurement — the Microsoft Advertising items listed above. Only set or read when you've clicked Accept (or previously granted consent), subject to the limits described above when consent is denied.

Browser controls

Beyond the choice on this page, you can also block or delete cookies through your browser's own settings, and many browsers let you send a Global Privacy Control signal automatically. Blocking cookies broadly may affect how parts of the wider web work, though this Site's core content will still load either way.

Changes to this policy

If the cookies or storage items we use change — for example if we add a new measurement tool — we'll update this page and the table above, and update the "Last updated" date at the top.
